{"id":1072572,"date":"2026-10-27T14:57:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T14:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufp.pt\/?p=1072572"},"modified":"2026-10-27T14:59:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-27T14:59:03","slug":"doctoral-degree-in-biomedical-and-health-sciences-marks-the-start-of-the-academic-year-with-the-inaugural-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ufp.pt\/en\/doutoramento-em-ciencias-biomedicas-e-da-saude-assinala-inicio-do-ano-letivo-com-aula-inaugural\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctoral Degree in Biomedical and Health Sciences marks the start of the academic year with the inaugural lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1072572\" class=\"elementor elementor-1072572\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19c8ef7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"19c8ef7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f316db6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f316db6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Fernando Pessoa University (UFP) hosted, on October 23rd, in the Nobre Hall, the inaugural lecture of the Doctorate in Biomedical and Health Sciences, a cycle of studies developed in partnership with the University of Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), which reinforces the collaboration between the two institutions in the field of biomedical research and health.<\/p><p>The session was attended by the President of the Fernando Pessoa Foundation and Emeritus Rector of UFP, Professor Dr. Salvato Trigo, the Rector of UFP, Professor Dr. Eug\u00e9nio Ferreira, and Professor Dr. Jos\u00e9 Vila\u00e7a, President of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences (ECVA), representing the UTAD Rectorate.<\/p><p>The coordinators of the study cycle were also present: Professor Dr. F\u00e1tima Cerqueira (UFP), coordinator, and the deputy coordinators Professor Dr. R\u00faben Fernandes (UFP), Professor Dr. Raquel Chaves (UTAD) and Professor Dr. Bruno Magalh\u00e3es (UTAD).<\/p><p>In her opening remarks, Professor Dr. F\u00e1tima Cerqueira highlighted the distinctive nature of this doctoral program, emphasizing the quality of the partner institutions and their International External Monitoring Commission, as well as the involvement of research and development units, industry, and patient associations.<\/p><p>The coordinator also highlighted the importance of this coordination between the academic and scientific community and society, with the aim of producing knowledge with an effective impact on improving the health and quality of care provided to patients.<\/p><p>In their interventions, the Rector of UFP and the President of ECVA reinforced the strategic importance of the partnership between the two higher education institutions, highlighting the role of responsible, transparent and independent research in responding to the current challenges of science and health.<\/p><p>The central moment of the session was the conference \u201cFrom Scientific Questions to Health Impact: Challenges and Opportunities in Biomedical Research in the 21st Century \u2013 Insights from Obesity and Cancer\u201d, delivered by Professor Dr. Raquel Soares, Full Professor of the Department of Biomedicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.<\/p><p>Drawing on her research experience in the fields of obesity and cancer, the speaker presented new doctoral students with a reflection on the path of scientific research, from formulating relevant questions to producing results with impact on health.
