Professor António Polónia, Associate Professor at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the Fernando Pessoa University, contributed to the publication of a study in the scientific journal The Lancet Oncology.
Titled “Deep learning on histopathological images to predict breast cancer recurrence risk and chemotherapy benefit: a multicentre, model development and validation study”, this scientific work presents an artificial intelligence model applied to digital pathology, capable of analyzing histopathological images to support therapeutic decisions in patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. The study demonstrates that this model can predict the response to chemotherapy, contributing to more personalized and patient-centered medicine.
The results show that the use of algorithms of deep learning This can improve risk stratification and assist clinicians in defining more appropriate therapeutic strategies, reducing unnecessary treatments and potentially leading to better clinical outcomes. This work represents a significant advance in the integration of artificial intelligence into oncological practice, bringing research closer to real-world application.
Professor António Polónia's collaboration in this study highlights his scientific and academic contribution to the field, consolidating UFP's position in the context of health research.
