The Fernando Pessoa University (UFP) and the Fernando Pessoa Higher School of Health (ESS-FP) joined the Global Week of Media and Information Literacy 2026, promoted by UNESCO, on October 26-30, with a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the development of critical thinking and the conscious and responsible use of information.
Under the motto «We all have a role», the initiative brought together the academic community and students from the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education, promoting reflection on the challenges of information in contemporary society.
Over five days, 25 activities were held across five literacy areas: financial literacy, media literacy, digital literacy, for citizenship, and health literacy. The program included conferences, workshops, webinars, podcasts, videocasts, and practical activities, addressing topics such as misinformation, artificial intelligence, digital security, citizenship, and health.
The initiative involved 163 participants, including 22 university teachers, 21 university students, 107 primary and secondary school students, nine institutional representatives and four technicians. Four UFP and ESS-FP organizational units were involved in this joint effort to bring higher education closer to the school community.
The programming has also extended to digital platforms, with the publication of 18 resources and the creation of 21 pedagogical resources, contributing to the dissemination of literacy knowledge and tools to different audiences.
The Global Week of Media and Information Literacy concluded with a session dedicated to the theme «Between evidence and the algorithm: research, education and social responsibility in information and youth literacy», reinforcing the importance of education, research and collective responsibility in building a more informed society.
With this initiative, UFP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting media and informational literacy, encouraging the development of essential skills for critical, conscious, and responsible participation in society.
