“Together at the Swallowing Table”: ESS-FP promotes open class on interdisciplinary work in dysphagia

The Fernando Pessoa Higher Education School of Health held an open lecture on 15 May titled “Together at the Swallowing Table: the importance of interdisciplinary work”, an initiative organised by Speech Therapy lecturers as part of the Clinical Education IV curriculum.

The session also featured the participation of final year students Leonor Garcia, Nádia Santos, and Tess Bensimhon, bringing together students and faculty from different health areas for a joint reflection on swallowing and its disorders. Throughout the activity, topics such as the clinical relevance of dysphagia, interdisciplinary collaboration models in healthcare, and the analysis of clinical cases were addressed, reinforcing the importance of coordination between professionals for safer, more effective, and person-centred intervention.

The initiative also highlighted the role of Speech Therapy in the assessment and intervention of swallowing disorders, promoting awareness of the impact of these changes on users' quality of life and safety. ESS-FP thus continues to invest in active teaching methodologies and knowledge-sharing initiatives that bring students, lecturers, and the academic community closer together.
