Professor Dr. Luís Borges Gouveia participated on October 16 in a panel titled “Public Libraries and Democracy” as part of the II Meeting of the Network of Public Libraries of the Middle Tejo. The initiative, which took place at the Alfredo Keil Cultural Center in Ferreira do Zêzere, addressed the potential of artificial intelligence in the context of public libraries, as well as the risks of the influence of algorithms on reading.
The panel in which Professor Dr. Luís Borges Gouveia participated was moderated by Margarida Teodora Andrade, and in addition to the UFP professor, Adolfo Mesquita Nunes also participated in the same panel. Professor Dr. Luís Borges Gouveia delivered a presentation titled “The library in the era of AI: the sustainability of democracy and the paradox of informational abundance”. The main idea conveyed is that democracy in the 21st century also depends on changing the role of public libraries, which must no longer be merely places of access to technology but must instead help people better understand the digital world and citizenship.
