Interdisciplinary Session on Tracheostomies Reinforces Link Between Speech Therapy and Nursing

The third-year Speech Therapy undergraduate students from the Fernando Pessoa School of Health participated, on 13 November, in an interdisciplinary class dedicated to the topic of tracheostomies, as part of the Evidence-Based Case Discussion I curriculum.

The session featured the collaboration of Professor Jacinta Gomes, a lecturer from Bachelor of Nursing and by Professor Dr Daniela Vieira, a lecturer at Speech Therapy Degree which led to in-depth reflection on the fundamental role of joint intervention in the care of tracheostomised patients.

Throughout the class, the complementary skills between Nursing and Speech Therapy in the rehabilitation and care of these patients were discussed, highlighting the importance of effective communication and coordination between clinical teams.

This initiative aimed to foster a collaborative and evidence-based practice, preparing future speech therapists for the challenges of both hospital and community settings.

The coordinated work between nurses and speech therapists is essential to ensure safe, humanised care that is centred on the needs and quality of life of patients.
