Professor Maria Inês Guimarães from the Fernando Pessoa University recently signed a letter to the editor titled “Artificial intelligence in forensic odontology: technological developments and future directions,” published in the journal Forensic Sciences Research.
In this work, Professor Maria Inês Guimarães explores the emerging role of artificial intelligence in forensic dentistry, highlighting how these technologies can significantly improve the accuracy, efficiency, and speed of human identification processes, especially in contexts such as criminal investigations, mass disasters, and missing persons cases. The article also addresses the main advances in machine learning models and computer vision applied to the analysis of dental X-rays and reconstruction, as well as the associated ethical and technical challenges, namely the need for standardised databases, the protection of sensitive data, and the legal validation of artificial intelligence systems.
