Open lecture on “Communication in academic and professional contexts in the Health area”

On 15 May, the Fernando Pessoa Higher Health School held an open lecture entitled “Communication in Academic and Professional Contexts in the Health Field”, an initiative organised by Speech Therapy lecturers as part of the Clinical Education IV curricular unit.

The session also featured the participation of final-year students Ana Sofia Silva, Ana Rita Cruz, Bárbara Duarte, Magda Silva, and Simona Martorana, bringing together students and lecturers from different health-related fields for a joint reflection on various forms of communication and their role in interacting with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and families. Throughout the activity, skills were developed related to the clear and assertive transmission of messages, active listening and empathy in interpersonal interactions, the distinction between verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as communication strategies in academic, professional, and clinical contexts.

The initiative also highlighted aspects related to therapeutic communication with patients and families, the importance of adapting the communication environment, and a brief introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems was carried out. ESS-FP thus continues to focus on active teaching methodologies and knowledge-sharing initiatives that bring students, lecturers, and the academic community closer together.
