Integrating AI with pedagogical intent
Teachers can use AI in the preparation of content, teaching and learning methodologies that involve and motivate students, exercises, study materials and tools for formative assessment, as this is the use with the greatest potential for pedagogical impact, namely by enabling a more individualized follow-up of students.
The rules must be consistent and understandable. Explain the reasons for the restrictions and avoid situations where their use of AI, in the face of the rules required of students, creates perceptions of unfairness.
The use of AI must be transparent, consistent with learning objectives, and equitable.
COMMON PRINCIPLES
Five levels of usage
Record the authorized levels in the unit curriculum record (FUC) and in the statement for each assessment element. Explain the decision to the students before the start of the unit curriculum.
LEVEL 00
Without AI
Without AI
Level 00 – No AI. Any use is not permitted. Typically applies to face-to-face tests and elements intended to verify autonomous execution competencies.
LEVEL 01
Planning
Planning
Level 01 – AI as an assistant in planning. Authorised to study and explore the topic, clarify concepts and organize ideas. No generated content is included in the final product.
LEVEL 02
Form
Form
Level 02 – AI as an assistant in its form. Authorized for linguistic revision, spelling and syntactic correction, translation, and formatting. The substantive content and the argumentative structure are the student’s own work, with the exception of content generated to improve the readability and clarity of the text.
LEVEL 03
Contents
Contents
Level 03 – AI as an assistant in content creation, with declared critical transformation. Use of generated content is permitted, provided that it has been critically transformed and declared. The student retains ownership of the central ideas, arguments, and methodological decisions.
LEVEL 04
Object of study
Object of study
Level 04 – AI as an object or instrument of study. Integrated use within the pedagogical objective itself, including the comparison of results between systems, critical analysis of biases, professional uses, ethical implications, or assisted co-production. Subject to full declaration, including the instructions used.
Preparation, verification and transparency
Review the learning outcomes of the curricular units that you teach, ensuring that they are achievable without AI and do not depend on the use of AI, except when that is the objective.
Declare
Declare the authorized levels of usage in each assessment element, and do so before the start of the curricular unit. You must explain why a given level is adopted, especially in cases of prohibition on the use of AI, allowing the student to understand the coherence of the decision with the learning outcomes of that course.
Guarantee
Ensure that the requirements and requirements for an assessment moment are not dependent on the use of AI by students, without prejudice to those who cannot or choose not to use AI.
Check
Verify all material produced with the support of AI for factual accuracy, linguistic quality, impartiality, and suitability for the proposed tasks before making it available.
Transparency
Being transparent about their own use of AI, exemplifying the appropriate ethical and responsible behavior that is required of students.
Inform
Inform the coordination of the study cycle of the AI systems that they use, mainly those that are not included in the UFP AI systems inventory.
Promote
Promote students’ critical reflection on the results obtained, identifying gaps, biases, and limitations, and outlining the consequences of an uncritical use in the academic and professional environment.
Abstaining from
Refrain from entering personal data of students, identified evaluation elements, or any data subject to confidentiality in external systems that have not been approved by the UFP. In case of doubt, please consult the Data Protection Officer beforehand.
Privilege
Prioritize, whenever available, the tools hosted internally or contracted by the UFP with appropriate contractual guarantees.
Classification cannot be delegated to AI.
Regarding evaluation, AI can support in producing formative feedback to students and in the pre-screening of objective aspects (for example, verification of formal requirements for assignments). The assignment of a rating to summative evaluation elements by AI systems is prohibited, although subject to subsequent confirmation, as well as the automatic delegation of the qualitative assessment that underpins the rating. Responsibility for evaluation is personal, non-delegable and human.
